William Morris registered Pimpernel as a wallpaper pattern in February 1876, at forty-two and in the most prolific stretch of his career. The showpieces are big sensual tulips and their curling leaves, but he named the design instead for the pimpernel, a small unassuming British wildflower threading quietly through the pattern. He thought well enough of it to hang it in his own dining room at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith.
