Van Gogh painted Irises in May 1889, during his first week at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, working straight from the garden. He called painting the lightning rod for his illness and started this canvas almost the moment he arrived. No two blooms are drawn the same way, and the flattened forms and strong outlines show how carefully he had been studying Japanese prints. The original is at the Getty in Los Angeles.
