The calla lily runs through Georgia O'Keeffe's work all through the 1920s, and it was a calla painting that first made her commercially famous when one sold for a headline sum in 1928. She liked the flower for its architecture, a single white curve wrapped around a yellow spadix, which let her paint something close to abstraction while still painting a plant.
