Monet moved to Giverny in 1883 and spent the rest of his life turning the grounds into a subject he could paint without leaving home. He ran the flower garden as banded blocks of color timed to bloom in sequence, and employed a staff of gardeners to keep it that way. He was explicit that the garden came first and the paintings followed from it.
