O'Keeffe began enlarging single blooms in the early 1920s, and her reasoning was blunt: nobody really looks at a flower, so she would paint one big enough that they had no choice. Red Canna is among the best known of these, its petals opening into bands of red and orange that read as pure color before they read as a plant.
