Hummingbirds caught mid-hover, wings and tails patterned in the ribbons of color Laurel Burch used instead of feathers.

Laurel Burch was self-taught, and she started at nineteen hammering jewelry from scrap metal in San Francisco to support her children. She was born with a rare bone disease that broke her bones more than a hundred times and often kept her painting from a bed or a wheelchair. None of it made it into the work, which stayed joyful to the end.
